Eating Right and Health Check ™
Grocery shopping can be a confusing experience for consumers who often feel bombarded with nutrition messages. To assist consumers in making more healthy food choices in the grocery store, in 1999 the Heart and Stroke Foundation created a not-for-profit food information program called Health Check.
The role of a healthy diet on overall health is well documented. Health Check makes healthy choices easier by cutting through the clutter in grocery stores and helping consumers quickly identify products that contribute to a healthy and balanced diet.
At the heart of the program is the on-pack Health Check symbol and the Heart and Stroke Foundation name. Every food product involved in the program has in addition to the Health Check symbol, an explanatory message and a Nutrition Facts table. The Health Check symbol on the package means that the Foundation's dietitians have reviewed the product's nutrition information and that it meets specific nutrient criteria based on Canada's Food Guide. Each product is evaluated on the basis of total fat, saturated fat, fibre, sodium, calcium, vitamins and minerals, depending on the food category.
"We're proud to be adding Safeway's Eating Right! line of products to the Health Check™ program," says Carol Dombrow, Registered Dietitian with the Heart and Stroke Foundation's Health Check™ program. "When companies like Canada Safeway show their commitment to programs like Health CheckTM by adding a line of more than 100 products, it becomes that much easier for health-conscious Canadians to make the healthy choice.
